Abstract

Much has been written about the debate between Ambedkar and Gandhi concerning the real meaning of the Bhagavad Gita since the publication of Riddles of Hinduism. Comparatively, however, the discursive encounter between Tilak and Ambedkar has not been so fortunate enough to receive similar public or even academic attention. Considering this as a lacuna in the existing philosophical scholarship on the Bhagavad Gita, the present paper attempts to engage critically the ideas of Lokmanya Tilak and Ambedkar concerning historical transmissibility, authorship and the politics of interpretation as presented in Srimad Bhagadgita-Rahasya and “The Philosophic Defence of the Counter-Revolution: Krishna and His Gita” respectively.
