Abstract

The article explores the multifaceted nature of emigration, focusing on the experiences of Malayali migrants through the lens of Dr. Deepesh Karimpunkal’s memoir, ‘Marubhoomiyile Marujeevithangal’ (Life in the Desert). Emigration, historically rooted in the human condition, has evolved into a significant phenomenon driven by various factors such as economic opportunities, social advancement, and the pursuit of refuge. The concept of expatriation is examined alongside theories of migration, including E.J. Ravenstein’s Laws of Migration and Everett S. Lee’s Push and Pull Theory, which highlight the motivations behind individuals leaving their homelands. The narrative of Amanulla, the memoir’s protagonist, illustrates the emotional complexities of nostalgia and homesickness, emphasizing how memories of home shape the identity of migrants. The article underscores the role of literature in articulating the challenges and triumphs of the migrant experience, revealing the profound impact of human connection and friendship amidst displacement. Ultimately, it advocates for a greater understanding of migration’s significance in contemporary society and the resilience of individuals navigating the challenges of their journeys while maintaining ties to their cultural roots.
